Extracurricular Activities ~ Frequently Asked Questions ~ Staight From The Horses Mouth!

Are you strict? Do you have a lot of rules?

Yeah, you’ll probably come to think that there’s a lot of rules. You’ll probably think half of them are too strict and the other half crazy. But just remember that a lot of privileges and trust built with houseparents will be based on your response to and respect for the boundaries set into place.

What will my houseparents be like?

The set standards for each set of houseparents are: 1) They are Christians and live like it; 2) They have built a solid foundation in their marriage; 3) They have experience and success when it comes to building relationships with children of all ages; and 4) They love children.

Beyond these qualifications, it’s all up to personality and the individual way of doing things. You may have a housemom who is outspoken and spontaneous . . .or gentle and structured. And you may have a housedad who love to play sports and enjoys long hikes in the woods . . or likes watching old movies and working on computers.

Do you have a dress code?

Yes, and this dress code is based upon biblical principles of modesty, message, and self-respect. Once you arrive you will learn more about the specific rules of the road and tricks of the trade. In general, a young woman’s clothing must cover her midriff (stomach) and back at all times, must leave her some room to breath, and should NOT “volunteer” more skin than people need to see. Young men’s clothing must also provide appropriate covering for skin and undergarments. Jeans should not be frayed at the bottom and shoes should be appropriate for the function. In regards to jewelry, females are allowed two earrings in each ear(lobe), males none. All other piercings are not allowed.

What about money?

You will receive a small allowance every week in order to buy things at the concession stand or get a soda at the gas station, etc… In addition to this, every month you will receive money to help pay for Cookson family outings, to purchase special items, and to buy clothes when you can’t find what you need at the clothing store.

What about weekends and summertime?

Each set of houseparents is responsible for planning family recreational activities during the weekends and throughout the summer. Specifically, though, when it comes to summertime, you will spend most of your time on-grounds and with your Cookson family (besides the short visit you may go on with your family). Some older high school students make money through the summer work program. Others attend summer school and/or work on projects at home.
Another fun thing about the summer is Wilderness Camp. About two weeks before school starts up, incoming freshman and high school students start packing their sleeping bags and bug spray for a week of challenges and fun. Some adventures include getting harnessed to go down the zipline and into the water, or to jump off the screamer (“That stupid thing that had me crying like a baby.”)

Okay, so you’re a Christian school. Does that mean you’re going to preach to me all the time?

It’s hard not to answer this question and not “preach to you.” The very word “Christian” means that we are followers of Christ and strive to be like Him. Because of this, it’s hard to stay quiet about all the great stuff that He’s done for us, especially when we may see you’re in need of some blessings yourself.
But no, you will not be forced to believe what we know to be the truth. You will not be disciplined for any beliefs you may hold (or not hold), with the exception that your beliefs bring harm to yourself or others and/or bring about inappropriate or disrespectful behavior.

Can I date?

Yes, no, maybe so. This question is a big one and hard to explain. It can also be quite hard to swallow for some who are used to having a boyfriend/girlfriend. Keep in mind that when you come to Cookson we will be looking at the big stuff in life, i.e., your relationship with your family, your relationship with God, your ability to deal with anger, your school situation . . . not whether or not you can attract members of the opposite sex. We want to help you find a balance, not give you more to juggle.

What about living arrangements?

Let me warn you . . . if you’ve never had a roommate, you’re probably about to experience something new! You will likely share a bunkbed, closet, and room design with another student. Feel free to bring your own pictures for the top of your dresser and posters for the walls. A personal touch is all a room needs sometimes to feel a little more like home.
