Counseling...

Counseling is an important part of this process because it gives everyone involved a chance to talk about personal and family issues in a safe environment.

There is going to be quite an adjustment period as you begin to build new relationships and learn the ropes at Cookson Hills. You will hopefully grow in personal awareness and sort through some garbage in your life (please don't be offended, everyone has some whether they know it or not). Counseling is an important part of this process because it gives everyone involved a chance to talk about personal and family issues in a safe environment.

F.Y.I., the counseling approach is "holistic," meaning that every part of you and your surrounding environment is considered in the counseling process. We won't just be talking about you and how your day is going. We'll be talking about your family, your friends, your anger, your fear, etc. And we won't just be talking with you. Your natural family and your Cookson family (namely, houseparents) will be involved as well.

"When will I have to start and how often will I be in counseling?" Not all children who come here will start counseling immediately. We realize that you need some time to settle in a bit and adjust to "Cookson life." It'll probably be about a month or so after you come when you will start meeting with a counselor on a regular basis (twice a month). This will likely be the case unless some major issue(s) comes up that requires the help of a counselor.

Did you say "horses?"

Yep! When helpful, Cookson counselors may occasionally choose to pair you up with one of our many horses instead of doing the "sit on the couch and tell me all your problems" type of counseling. One individual coined the phrase, "Good horse-sense makes stable livin". In other words, horse therapy gives our counselors free rein to spur you on towards good deeds (all puns intended).
